In the heart of Michigan, nestled within the small town of Vassar, a story of dedication and innovation unfolded through the life of Amelia Gunnell, a nurse with over 50 years of caring for others. Amelia, whose journey in healthcare began in the corridors of Saginaw’s hospital and led her to home healthcare, has always been driven by a desire to improve the lives of those she serves.
A Vision for Better Mobility
Amelia’s passion for nursing was supported by her husband, Robert Gunnell. Witnessing the struggles of patients with severe disabilities inspired Robert to think differently about mobility solutions. He envisioned wheelchairs that were functional and tailored to the needs of each individual. These wouldn’t be just any wheelchairs; they would be lightweight, foldable, and perfectly contoured to the user’s body, providing complete support and comfort.

In the late 1970s, the couple turned their vision into reality, founding Gunnell Inc. in Vassar. They started small but with big ambitions, crafting custom wheelchairs with features like tilt-in-space and recline functions. Gunnell’s chairs were revolutionary, offering various seating modifications.

The innovation did not stop there. Gunnell Inc. became pioneers in integrating foam-in-place seating options for extra comfort and support. Today, Gunnell Inc. is based out of a modern manufacturing facility in Elk City, Oklahoma. The company continues to evolve with new technologies, constantly improving how chairs are made to offer even greater comfort and support.
